In light of continuous calls by the United Nations and humanitarian organizations about the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, especially in light of the closure measures imposed by the authorities to limit the spread of the Corona virus, the problem of food availability and access to it at the family level is exacerbated.
According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, 16.2 million people in Yemen are expected to face high levels of acute food insecurity, and 47,000 people are expected to slip into catastrophic conditions.
The Acute Food Insecurity Phase Classification measures the level of food insecurity and there are five phases of acute food insecurity. High levels of acute food insecurity start from the third stage of the classification, the crisis level, and represent the highest level. The fifth stage of classification is disaster or famine.
In response to the crisis in Yemen, FAO has developed Livelihoods Support Emergency Response Plans, with the support of resource partners, to reduce acute food insecurity and save the lives of the most vulnerable families, through improved access to food, economic empowerment, livelihood recovery, improved agricultural infrastructure and development Capacity.
FAO has partnered with the Government of Japan to provide poultry production systems to vulnerable families in Yemen. Japan continues to support the various emergency agricultural livelihood assistance interventions implemented by FAO in Yemen.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) worked in partnership with the Government of Japan to restore agricultural livelihoods, enhance local food availability, and empower women in society. FAO has selected 2,900 beneficiary families, giving priority to female-headed families and families with lactating mothers, and provided them with 29,000 laying hens, 203 tons of poultry feed and 2,900 materials and supplies for building poultry houses.
